On 3 August 2026, a debate was held in Sopot on the future of education in Pomerania in the context of the development of nuclear power and offshore wind energy. The meeting was attended by representatives of central government, local authorities, universities in the Tri-City area, and companies from the energy and fuel sectors.

Discussions centred, amongst other things, on adapting vocational and technical education to the needs of major energy investments, creating new degree programmes and specialisations, and ensuring an adequate supply of qualified workers. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for teacher training and further professional development, the development of modern educational infrastructure, and strengthening the teaching of physics and chemistry in secondary schools.
The meeting was attended by representatives of central government and local authorities: Barbara Nowacka, Minister of Education; Jacek Karnowski, Deputy Minister for Funds and Regional Policy; Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim, Mayor of Sopot; Piotr Grzelak, Deputy Mayor of Gdańsk; Oktawia Gorzeńska, Deputy Mayor of Gdynia; and Agnieszka Baranowska, member of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Executive Board.
The Tri-City’s higher education institutions were represented by: Prof. Adam Weintrit, Rector of the Gdynia Maritime University; Dr hab. Mariusz Kaczmarek, Eng., Professor at Gdańsk University of Technology, Vice-Rector for Education; and Dr hab. Sylwia Mrozowska, Professor at the University of Gdańsk, the Rector’s Representative for Cooperation with the Nuclear Sector and Coordinator of the Energy Transition Lab programme at the University of Gdańsk’s Centre for Sustainable Development.
Companies from the energy sector were represented, amongst others, by Bartosz Fedurek, CEO of PGE Baltica, and Michał Olszewski, Deputy CEO of Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe.
The energy transition in Pomerania will require not only investment in nuclear and offshore energy, but also the appropriate training of personnel. This calls for coordinated cooperation between the administration, local authorities, schools, universities and businesses in developing educational programmes that meet the needs of the new sectors of the economy.
