Community gardens, a groowroom or an economic pour of water – these are just some of the ideas submitted for the Green UG Competition. Students, PhD students and employees of the University of Gdansk submitted 30 projects in mixed teams, once again proving that cooperation pays off. The competition is carried out as part of the SEA-EU 2.0 project funded by Erasmus+.

The aim of the Green UG competition is to increase the involvement of the academic community in the ecological and social transformation of the University of Gdansk. 80,000 PLN gross is earmarked for the implementation of projects in the 2024 edition. The cost estimate for the implementation of a single project cannot exceed PLN 20,000 gross.

During the open call for applications from 18 March 2024 to 8 April 2024, 30 projects were submitted, which were developed by mixed teams involving at least one person from two different groups of the community: students and doctoral students, academic staff and administration.

A significant proportion of the projects relate to the addition of outdoor infrastructure. These include proposals for outdoor gyms, new gardens and the addition of infrastructure for cyclists. Some of the ideas include innovative solutions – for example, the idea of a moss installation to purify the air or the purchase of bicycles that generate electricity. The common denominator of all proposals is concern for the environment and the dissemination of knowledge on sustainable development.

Applicants most often submitted projects involving activities at the main campus in Gdansk Oliwa. Investment proposals were also submitted for the campuses in Gdynia, Sopot and Borucino.

Shortly after the closing of the call for applications, the stage of verification of the projects by the working team began. Then, on 15 May 2024, the Competition Committee will approve the final list of projects that will take part in the vote. All students, doctoral students and employees of the University of Gdansk will be able to vote in the plebiscite from 20-27 May 2024. Electronic voting will be carried out on the competition platform, which will be logged in using the data from the Student Portal / Employee Portal. Each eligible voter will be able to vote for up to three projects from the list.
