Sustainable development, as defined by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987, means “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. In 2015, UN member states unanimously adopted a resolution currently in force and being implemented: Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is set out as a strategy for world development until 2030 and includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
