The UG Faculty of Law and Administration has been able to count on noticeable savings in energy consumption since last year. All thanks to the energy-saving led lamps that were installed in the UG Law Library as part of the Green University of Gdansk Academic Budget. Electricity consumption in the faculty library has dropped by more than half.
Green UG is an initiative supporting the green transformation of the University of Gdansk implemented within the framework of the SEA-EU 2.0 project funded by Erasmus+(Task 4.4 – SEA-EU Goes Greener). The principles of the competition are based on the UG Academic Civic Budget.
The projects that gained funding were selected by online voting, in which all members of the UG community could participate: students, doctoral students and employees. One such initiative was “Replacement of lighting with led lighting in the UG Law Library,” submitted by Anna Stasiewicz-Jakubik, Head of the University of Gdansk Law Library. The budget of the project was PLN 20 000. As part of the work carried out in February 2025, the worn-out fluorescent lamps were replaced with new LED lamps, which have a much longer lifespan.
– One LED fluorescent lamp can work for up to 30,000 hours, which with our demand means about seven years of use,” says Anna Stasiewicz-Jakubik.
A key change that helped reduce electricity consumption was the installation of automatic motion sensors, so that the light turns on only when someone is using the book collection in the area.
– Electricity consumption after the installation of energy-efficient led lights in the UG Law Library reduced by about 19,656 kWh in a year, about 58%, reports Kamil Kurek, specialist in the operation of electrical installations.
– The data on the reduction of electricity consumption by nearly 58% is a positive surprise for us and confirms that the replacement of lamps with leds and the installation of motion sensors was a very good decision,” stresses Anna Stasiewicz-Jakubik. – One of the goals of the Green UG project was to reduce electricity consumption, and we have achieved this goal.
In the coming months, projects subsidized under the second edition of the Competition will be implemented. You can read more here: ABO UG and Green UG – we know the results of the vote! – Center for Sustainable Development of the University of Gdansk (CZRUG)
