Education for Sustainable Development Programme

As part of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) program, we promote interdisciplinary education focused on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations General Assembly Resolution 72/22210 recognized the ESD as “an integral component of the SDG 4 in education and a key enabler of all other SDGs”. The 17 SDGs cover key environmental challenges (e.g. climate change, water quality, ocean health and clean land) as well as key issues to be considered in development discourses such as poverty, gender equality and equity.

Education for Sustainable Development is a lifelong learning process and an integral part of quality education. It enhances the cognitive, social and emotional and behavioural dimensions of learning. It is holistic and transformational, and encompasses learning content and outcomes, pedagogy and the learning environment itself.

LEARNING GOALS

The overall objective of ESD for 2030 is to build a more just and sustainable world through the achievement of the 17 SDGs. UNESCO is the lead UN agency for Education for Sustainable Development and is responsible for the overall management, coordination and implementation of ESD for 2030.

CHALLENGES

The task of education is to transform the interdependence of the global world into conscious solidarity. The knowledge-based economy and the knowledge society are based, inter alia, on: creating knowledge in the form of scientific achievements resulting from research; knowledge transfer through education and training systems; popularizing knowledge by means of modern information and communication technologies; application of knowledge for innovation and technological progress.

The condition for the effective implementation of sustainable development of each country is the active participation in this process of a conscious and well-educated society. Education should be open and accessible to all. It is also important it should be conducted in a continuous manner: from upbringing in a family, through formal education systems (primary, secondary and higher education) and informal education (programs and promotion of appropriate pro-ecological attitudes). The global idea of sustainable development should be included in the system of formal education. Formal education involves developing awareness, understanding sensitivity and abilities, and aims to make people aware of the relationship between humans and nature, and to ensure the durability of these relationships. Such education must be based on the perception of interrelationships in various systems and the ability to combine and balance problems arising in various fields, such as: economy, environment and building an environmentally friendly society, or exercising power.

CZR UG launches thematic, interdisciplinary postgraduate studies. We are engaged in the implementation of SDGs, promoting various forms of sharing knowledge and experiences, taking care of the practical dimension of education, which develops knowledge, values and skills enabling people to make decisions, guided by care for future generations. Education for sustainable development is targeted at all people of all ages.
